When visiting Queen City (Gainesville) one must make a side trip down Atlanta Highway to visit the well traveled road of international flavors including taqueria trucks, seafood markets and of course, ice cream.
Lunching along Atlanta Highway usually starts at the Atlanta Highway Seafood Market, where there's usually a line from the counter to the door - but nobody minds the wait because their fresh catch seafood is worth it. Driven in several times a week from the Gulf Coast, AHSM's variety of fish and shellfish is beyond compare in the region.
The owners are transplants from New Orleans following the devastation of hurricane Katrina. They brought with them a flavor mix of Asian and Cajun inspired seafood dishes. What a mash up! Here you can order fresh ceviche, low country boil with craw-fish, gumbo and egg rolls. Our favorite is the fried shrimp po boy with slaw and fries. What a time to be alive!
Just up the block is the best stop for dessert. La Mejor De Michoacan is a colorful and friendly place for all kinds of frozen treats. Their made from scratch ice cream and popsicles are blended from fresh fruit purees and then topped with Mexican chocolate and nuts. Handspun milkshakes in flavors like Dulce de Leche and banana splits are some favorite treats not to miss.
For the adventurous palette, we suggest a spicy and sweet combo. The pineapple and chili popsicle or a mango/chili ice cream sundae will fill your mouth with sweet creaminess and finish off with a bang of chili pepper.
Not into ice cream? No problem - they also have chocolate covered frozen bananas rolled in crushed nuts. Crazy good stuff.
